The Assessor determines your tax rates.
FACT
The Assessor does not set tax rates or millage. The Assessor’s responsibility is to discover, list, and value taxable property according to Oklahoma law. Tax rates are determined by the levies that apply to your property.
MYTH
A property visit automatically means your value is going up.
FACT
Visual inspections are about accuracy. They may identify new improvements, but they can also identify removed structures, damage, deterioration, or incorrect property information that could result in a lower value.
MYTH
You can't do anything if you disagree with your property value.
FACT
You absolutely have the right to question your assessment. Taxpayers can speak with the Assessor's Office and, when applicable, use the formal appeal process. A good Assessor should make that process understandable and accessible.
MYTH
The Assessor can simply lower your property taxes.
An Assessor cannot legally promise lower assessments just to lower tax bills. Property must be valued fairly and according to Oklahoma law. What the Assessor can do is make sure values are accurate and taxpayers receive every exemption they legally qualify for.

Assessment values are just arbitrary numbers.

Property values are based on market data, property characteristics, appraisal methods, and Oklahoma law. County assessment practices are also reviewed for compliance by the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

The Assessor collects your property taxes.
FACT
The Assessor values property. The County Treasurer collects property taxes. They are separate offices with different responsibilities.
